Yohji Yamamoto Retrospective

Finally it’s exciting to visit a Museum in Israel! With all due respect, when one compares the curation in Israeli museums to the great museums of the world, we come up short. But no more! The design museum in Holon is exhibiting Yohji Yamamoto- retrospective of 40 years of design!

The exhibition has over 80 items of Yamamoto’s minimalist avant-garde designs of women’s and men’s-wear, which explore correlations between people, places, clothing and design. Curated by Galit Gaon, Holon Design Museum’s chief curator, the exposition challenges and re-conceptualizes the way in which conventional fashion exhibitions are presented.

The expressive installation, designed by Masao Nihei, cleverly brings together all the various indoor and outdoor spaces of the museum, that was designed by Ron Arad, including two major galleries, lab space, garden and public areas. The use of the private and public spaces is designed to evoke experiences of inspiration, emotions, memories, and design.

Yohji Yamamoto says “After exhibiting in London, Florence and Paris, it is natural flow for me to organize an exhibition in Israel this time – a country very rich in culture. In an era where we only receive prepared information, as a thinker, I want to see Israel with my own eyes and feel it through my skin to get to know it well. Now I will be able to experience it live”.

Unfortunately, Yamamoto cancelled his arrival at the last minute, so he won’t be able to experience it live, but we can!

During the exhibition, a special concept store will be open in the fashion house Comme il Faut, which will be selling Yamamoto’s selected items. This collaboration between Comme il Faut and Yohji Yamamoto also inspired a series of lectures about fashion and body, fashion and ethics, and fashion and tradition.
