Black and White are in for Spring! Really?! – This seems to be the never-ending trend that we hear about season after season, after season. Of course, there is good reason for this – its an oldie, but a never failing goodie. However, we are all about the new and the exciting, so lets talk about the new trends for THIS spring/summer at least, unless your style never left 1995 – that’s right there is a whiff of 90’s in the spring air.
Bare Midriffs / Cutouts
Starting top left: TOPSHOP, JUNGLE CROP TEE BY ESCAPOLOGY, $46.00 // TOPSHOP, EYELASH LACE CROP TOP, $28.00 // TOPSHOP, PEEKABOO CUT-OUT BRALET TOP, $45.00 // Colette, Jeremy Scott Cropped top in micro-perforated cotton, $382
This one might send you frantically packing for the gym, but while some popular styles are extra revealing, you don’t have to run to shed all you winter hibernation weight just yet. The designer gods have smiled upon us and there are plenty of styles that show just a sliver of skin, a hint really – so not only can you show some skin, you can do it without the muscle pain, and lets face it we like our curves. This trend is not only for the 20′ somethings, but one can wear it in her 30’s, 40’s and may be even 50’s? There are age appropriate options for all, so we say – why not!
Left to Right: Fashion Union, Striped Mini Skirt, £15.00 // Top Shop, ACID DENIM LOOK SKATER SKIRT, $40.00 // ASOS Full Midi Circle Skirt with Pockets, $74.81 // TOPSHOP, FOLIAGE PRINT SKATER SKIRT, $40.00
Why these skirts are called “Skater” who knows, but we love them anyway. Polka dots, stripes, graphic prints, solids, anything goes on these free flowing skirts, and as long as the fabric allows movement you can go with any material of your choice (cotton, lace, silk, even leather). The most popular length is mini, however every length is in – so whatever your length preference is you can find it in this easy style. The best way to wear it is with a midriff baring top (see tend above). Of course!
Strappy heels / low heels – the 90’s kind
Remember the popular 90’s sandals – the single strap in the front, the squarish shape, the not so high, thick heel? Well its back! You might be asking how in this post “Sex and the City” world would women go for the unrefined pre SATC look? It’s been updated for the new millennium – that’s how. This time around it is a bit more polished, more elegant one might say. The square shape is softer the heel is higher (for the most part) and thinner – but the 90’s sandal clearly comes through – and that is just fine by us.
Tailored Shorts/ Bermuda Shorts
From left to right: Nordstrom, Vince Camuto Diamond Jacquard Bermuda Shorts, $85 // Nordstrom, Vince Camuto Bermuda Shorts, $36.98 // ASOS City Shorts in Geo Print, $58.19 // ASOS Linen Shorts In Longline, $29.93
Every Spring there seems to be a new trend for shorts. This season is no different – this time it’s the more tailored look that is in vogue, a counter balance to the skater skirt perhaps? Whatever the reason this elongating style is a welcome reprieve from the bottom barring styles of the recent past.
Vans Sneakers / Flat shoes
The ultimate skater shoes have grabbed the trend spotlight once again. Sure, the platformed sneakers a la Isabel Murant, have been a high fashion favorite for a couple of seasons now, but the flat, classic variety is what is hot for spring. Combining the comfort factor with the slip resistant rubber soles, with the multitude of styles, colors and designs – how can you not want to get your feet into a pair. So forget the ‘Tom’s’ slip on and go classic!
May be this is what you should be wearing your skater skirt with (see trend above). Don’t you love it when everything falls neatly into place?
