It takes someone really special and talented to make it in New York City AND in the fashion world. But in the case of Roomeur, it’s two super special and talented Israeli designers who have made their way to NYC and are on their way to making it HUGE!
The designers behind Roomeur, Hagit Kassif and Omer Poizner, met during their studies in Shenkar College of Engineering and Design. After making it across the ocean to NYC they parted ways, at least professionally, Hagit to DVF and Omer to Elie Tahari. These career achievements in-and-of themselves would constitute great professional successes, but Hagit and Omer wanted more freedom to create their vision. And so in 2012 they came back together to form their own label, Roomeur.
Roomeur is a contemporary ready-to-wear label with a luxe twist. The designers themselves describe their vision best: “It is a strong, sophisticated, feminine silhouette, using historical, ethnic influences that are adapted and translated into slick, modern designs, using high-end fabrics and new fabric treatments”. The end results are truly beautiful and fuse contemporary and traditional, hard and soft, feminine and masculine.
The debut pre-fall 2013 collection was inspired by Frida Kahlo, and it was not only the ‘obvious': the vibrant colors, the beautiful embroidery, and adaptation of flowers, but the also the more ‘enigmatic': such as her free spirit, and her sexual/gender duality, that greatly influenced the designers. The end result is Frida Kahlo re-imagined for contemporary NYC, still same spirit but brought forward into modern day, its timeless style but edgy and unexpected.
For their next, FALL 2013 collection, which is being produced in both NYC and Israel, Hagit and Omer are looking to Frida once again, but this time she will be brought out of NYC into outer space- Can’t wait!
It is always great to see Israeli designers make it big abroad, we do wish though that they did not have to leave the country to reach such success.
