For Autumn/Winter ’14 Maria Berman went back to ‘Mother Russia’!…. Metaphorically speaking of course, she was inspired by her Russian heritage, and wanted to capture the juxtaposition of nature and city, the Russian’s return to Dacha (country vacation home located near urban areas).
Her use of knits, wool, and quilted fabrics and the mostly dark color palette, seem to draw from the grim and hefty street-wear during the famously brutal Russian Winter. Maria excels at manipulating fabrics and creating interesting and unique textures and patterns, which she does beautifully in this collection. While inspired by the traditional, this collection is anything but: the modern shapes, sophisticated construction, sprinkling in of color, and even some sailor motifs set it apart.
Just like flowers in a forest that bloom in early spring and pierce through the dark trees, the infusion of color shines through the mostly dark collection. Maria hand painted the patterns on the shorter skirts, and the patterns on the quilted jackets invoke the look of ‘bed of lilies of the valley’.
