When our friend and collaborator Kristof (you may remember him from our lovely summer post – Vegan Crash Course) of the ever-popular blog WhiteCityBoy invited us “behind the scenes” of his new production, our initial response was “Yes!” before we knew the What, Why and Where. Then we found out the details and our second reaction was a resounding “Yes!”. And so, we found ourselves a week later on location, taking in and documenting, the very organized photo-shoot of 8 very talented Israeli Indi designers, wearing their own creations. You can see Part 1 of the production on WhiteCityBoy blog NOW!
So what DID go on behind the scenes, you may ask? And why, ohh why did he decide to take on such a complicated project? Well, read on and it will all become very clear….
Let’s start from the beginning: it was about 1 year ago that Kristof started his blog after settling in to his new life in Tel Aviv (he is a transplant from Hungry, where he is a real-life celebrity). He got to know and fell in love with Tel Aviv fashion, food and culture. In fact he had been in a bit of a funk when it came to fashion and it was the Israeli designers and their original work that revived his “passion for fashion”. And so the idea for a lifestyle blog where he can share his passions was born.
Now, a year later, he wanted to commemorate the WhiteCityBoy anniversary in a big way, as he put it: “The blog was turning 1 year old soon and it was unexpected that it became so popular so fast. This was serious, and I needed to do something that is in keeping with the mission of what I had in mind when I started this blog: To introduce talented Israeli people to the world. So I decided to approach the designers that I really appreciate and have written about in the past year, to see if they would like to be a part of a special photo-shoot, where we will match the (designer’s) face with the label. I originally intended to have 5 designers in the production, and in case some said no I reached out to 8, but luckily everybody said yes, so the production grew! It’s a very special group of people, one designer is very new, Ella Levy, but everyone is talking about her, I too fell in love with her and had to have her in it as well!”
So he gathered his favorite designers, interviewed each one and had them model their own designs, after all who can better showcase their vision than the designers themselves.
On the day of the shoot the designer’s times were staggered so as one was getting his/her make up done by the very skillful makeup artist Yoni Shain, another one was being photographed outside. As the make up went on the interview commenced, each designer was very passionate in describing what they do and what drives them to continue in this tough industry (to see what the designers had to say and to see their beautiful photographs check out WhiteCityBoy).
“What’s exciting for me” Kristof continued: “is to be working with everyone involved, not just the designers but all the professionals and creative people who are here today helping make this a reality. For example, I have been talking with Doron Ritter, an accomplished photographer (also a Hungarian Israeli), about doing something together for a long time and finally we have the perfect opportunity to collaborate. It’s incredible, I called all these people who are so talented and all of them agreed to take part. This is what makes this production so exceptional and rewarding!
For many designers involved it was a very new experience and at first some were uneasy in front of the camera. Neta Efrati was the first one of the day to be photographed, and even though she has been in business for many years, she herself has never been in the spotlight or had her hair and makeup professionally done for a photo-shoot. But in the masterful hands of Doron, the hunky photographer, each one eased into a their session comfortably.
When we asked the designers why they decided to participate in this photo-shoot, all of them said that they had no second thoughts when presented with such an artistic and unique idea.
The atmosphere of the photo-sessions on the whimsical streets of Jaffo was magnifying and quite lively, with the passers-by stopping to watch and comment, of course! One could feel the creative energy of the photographer and his assistant, Sara Salamon (a young and promising talent, who’s currently working at Sisel Photography) who was also the filmographer on set.
And so after a full day of fashion and creativity the night skies descended and the production came to a close. We had a lovely time observing, chronicling, and even lending a helping hand. Even Kristof’s adorable dog did his part in the production by snuggling up to anyone who would have him (which was everyone!).
